Broncbusters open the season at Terry Masterson Classic
Hutchinson, KS-The Broncbuster cross-cross country teams opened the 2022 season at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Friday.
Women's Recap
The women's team finished 10th overall with a score of 253.
Right from the start, Shareen Cheruiyot took the lead and battled with Gretchen Kuffel of Fort Hays State throughout the race. Things stayed close but with a final move in the last half mile by Kuffel, Cheruiyot hung on for a 2nd place finish with a time of 17:59. Her time was a 1:43 improvement from her performance last year at the meet as well as further improved her school record in the 3-mile distance.
Valentine Lagat had a strong performance, placing 12th with a personal best time of 19:08.4 in the 3-mile, a :46 improvement. Her time was the 2nd best performance in school history for the distance.
Freshman Sara Chapa made her collegiate debut, clocking in a 22:11.5, good enough for 90th place. Her performance puts her 3rdon the all-time performance list for the 3-mile.
Jania Don Juan was close behind and just missed her personal best, clocking in a time of 22:47.9 for 100th place. Her performance still solidifies her 4th on the all-time performance list.
Taylor Thorp set a new personal best by 20 seconds, clocking in a 23:19.2 for 107th place. Her performance puts her 6th on the all-time performance list.
Andrea Serrano placed 125th with a time of 25:07.0. Her performance maintains her position in 7th on the all-time performance list.
Rebecca Potts placed 127th with a new personal best time of 25:45.5. Her performance puts her 8th on the all-time performance list in that distance.
Men's Recap
The men's team placed 14th with a score of 376
Jose "Froy" Ruiz led the Broncbusters with a stellar performance, running a 53-second improvement for a time of 22:34.1 for 58th place. His performance puts him 9th in the all-time list for the 4-mile.
Matt Veloz had a huge improvement, running a 1:32 improvement for a personal best time of 23:33.7; placing 91st. His performance put him 15th on the all-time list.
Ricardo Mijares was close behind, clocking in a new personal best time of 23:50.4 for 99th place. His 2:05 improvement, biggest improvement of any Buster, puts him 16th on the all-time performance list.
Daniel Aguilar made a big push for the Busters, clocking in a 45-second improvement to place 117th with a personal best of 24:34.0.
Rosalio Ruiz help round off the Buster team score, placing 121st with a time of 24:40.4. His performance was a 1:02 improvement from this meet last year.
Zaccerie Penka placed 140th with a time of 25:22.8, and Edgar Ruiz placed 171st with a time of 28:00.7.
