Another heartbreaker; Broncbusters fall in five
Garden City, KS-Time and time again, Garden City Head Coach Jacquelynne Matula has seen this scenario play out before.
Up two-sets-to-one with a chance to close out the match, only to falter down the stretch.
Unfortunately, the season of bad breaks continued on Friday night.
Frank Phillips took full advantage, overcoming a one-set deficit to beat Garden City in five 19-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 and 15-11.
"Our offense was really good early on," Matula said. "But then, like so many other times, we just didn't finish."
In the first set, Garden City (4-18, 1-7) fell behind 11-6. But they fought back to tie the match at 16 before racing to a six-point win.
"We've shown we can play with anyone," Matula said. "It just comes down to being consistent."
In the second frame, it was the Broncbusters jumping out to an early 3-0 edge. But Frank Phillips roared back by scoring eight out of the next 10 points and eventually built a 15-11 advantage.
Timeout Garden City.
"We just didn't respond well in that second set," Matula said.
Frank Phillips coasted from there, closing out the frame with an eight-point win.
After Garden City won the third set in overtime, the Broncbusters had an 18-16 lead in the fourth before the Plainsmen surged in front 21-20. Frank Phillips then scored four out of the final five points to force a fifth set.
"We should have closed them out there," Matula said.
The Broncbusters still had a chance to close things out, up 10-9 in the final stanza. But the Plainsmen reeled off six out of the final seven sets to take the match.
Frank Phillips improved to 9-12 on the season.
