Historic opening day at Wichita State for Broncbuster track
Wichita, KS-It was an historic day at the KT Woodman Invite on Friday night.
Women's Recap
Shareen Cheruiyot led the Broncbusters in the 1500-meter run, setting a new personal best time of 5:03.23. Teammates Cielo Garcia and Taylor Thorp both set personal bests, running 5:48.26 and 6:04.42.
Valentine Lagat ended the night with a huge performance in her 10k debut. She ran a smart race and was 12th in the 22-person field with a time of 38:49.77. Her performance shattered the school record by nearly six minutes. Lagat's national-qualifying performance currently puts her second in the nation for the event.
Men's Recap
Angel Ayala opened the event leading the Broncbusters in the 1500-meter run, setting a season best time of 4:26.98. Teammates Daniel Aguilar (4:37.75), Rosalio Ruiz (4:38.89), and Cyle Peterson (5:06.44) all ran personal best times.
Matt Veloz won his heat of the 800-meter run, clocking in a new personal best time of 2:04.65, while Dennis Mutai was the top Broncbuster in the 10k, making history in his debut. Mutai won with a blistering time of 29:15.99; shattering the previous school record as well as giving him the fastest national qualifying time in the nation. Teammate Kelvin Cheruiyot was close behind, clocking in a time of 31:08.59; earning him the 8th best national qualifying time. Ricardo Mijares and Jose Garcia both had solid debuts, running 37:01.59 and 37:04.30 respectively.
Jose "Froy" Ruiz and Zaccerie Penka closed out the evening with personal best performances in the 5k, running 16:45.62 and 17:26.49.
