Garden City, KS-Garden City's season did not end the way Head Coach Nick Salazar would have liked. But on Monday, three of his players were recognized for their performance during the 2016-2017 season.
Sophomore post DeRae Lewis, sophomore sharpshooter Kavita Akula and freshman guard Monica Barefield were named to the All-Jayhawk team. Lewis made the second team while Barefield and Akula were honorable mentions.
Lewis played in 30 games during her second season in Garden City, averaging 11 points and 9.3 rebounds. She notched seven double-doubles and finished fourth in the conference with 72 block shots.
Akula broke the school single-game record when she nailed nine 3-pointers in a win over Pratt on Dec. 10. She shot 36 percent from downtown and averaged nine points per game. She finished five treys shy of setting the career mark for 3-pointers.
Barefield made it back from offseason appendectomy to average 13.2 poings and 2.3 assists. She scored in double figures in six out of her final seven games.
