Broncbuster women make it two in a row
Colby, KS-It was three months in the making, but the Broncbusters finally consecutive victories together.
DeRae Lewis scored 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting as Garden City won back-to-back games for the first time since November with a 75-57 Saturday night at the Community Building.
The Broncbusters jetted out to a 40-19 lead only to have a rain of four 3-pointers come down from Journey Jones right before half to make it a 44-31 lead.
Despite the win, sophomore guard Kavita Akula ran into a back pick from Johnson at midcourt and fell down where she remained for several minutes. She was able to get up, but because she suffered what was diagnosed as a concussion, her status is questionable for the next two games.
Monica Barefield scored 13 points for Garden City, who can still clinch a home tournament game with a win Monday and some help. Tionnia McKee had 12 and Jessica Carillo poured in 11. Jones was one of two players for Colby in double figures with a career high 25.
"I thought we did just enough defensively," Broncbusters Coach Nick Salazar said. "I wasn't 100 percent pleased with our defensive effort. At the same time, I think our defense continues to improve. And I thought we rebounded the ball very, very well. The biggest thing offensively over the last three games is that we started to figure things out."
The loss was Colby's 21st in a row dropping their women's team to (3-26, 1-24).
