Poetic justice as Garden City walks off Dodge
Garden City, KS-Payback was oh so sweet.
A month after Garden City gave up a two-run homer to Kloe Nelson in the bottom of the seventh, the Broncbusters enacted a little revenge on Wednesday. Maria Avendano Fori smashed a game-winning two-out, two-run bomb, and the Broncbusters erased a four-run deficit to beat archrival Dodge City, 12-11 at Tangeman Sports Complex.
Trailing 11-7 and down to their final out in the seventh, Daryelin Rivas Chavez cleared the bases with a three-run homer to keep Garden City alive. Jade Hendrix followed with a single, and Fori sent the crowd into a frenzy after tattooing an elevated off-speed 0-2 pitch for a walk-off shot to give the Broncbusters their fourth straight win to improve to 19-13 overall and 11-7 in conference.
Chavez went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers and five RBI, and Maysen Kurene-Iwikau collected a season-high three hits.
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead thanks to Chiara Olison's two-run homer in the first, Dodge City answered with Rylie Miller's solo blast in the second. They added another run in the third and then exploded for seven in the fourth-eventually chasing Olison out of the circle. But credit Ashlyn Powell, who settled things down, allowing just one run on three hits over 2 2/3.
Chavez hit the first of her two long balls in the fourth-a solo jack that cut the Conquistadors' lead to 10-6.
