Garden City uses the long ball to down Colby in game two
By Mike Pilosof
Colby, KS-Give Garden City a lot of credit.
After getting run ruled in game one, Becky Gundy's team responded in the finale. Madison Biller and Audrey Graf went yard, Ariel Denney was spectacular in the circle, striking out seven, and the Broncbusters earned a split with a 4-1 victory over Colby in game two.
"We did a really nice job of responding," Gundy said. "Ariel did a really good job of helping our team get their focus back."
With the game scoreless in the third, Garden City took advantage of a mistake by Makenna Pendergrass at second base that allowed Denney to reach. Brittany Dowell followed with a single, and Graf smashed a two-run homer to make it 3-0. An inning later, Biller did a job on Whisper Doliwa's rise ball, crushing a 2-2 pitch over the wall in center for a 4-0 cushion.
"Our hitters did a really good job," Gundy said. "Audrey had a big day and so did Madison (Biller)."
Colby scratched across their lone run in the seventh when Alexis Kagan slapped an RBI single with two outs. But the threat was ended moments later when Denney got Layne Gillins to ground out to first.
Denney picked up her sixth win in the circle, scattering eight hits in seven innings. Denney, Dowell, and Graf all collected multi-hit games.
Doliwa took the loss for Colby, allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings.
