Garden City, KS-It was one of those nights when self-inflicted wounds came back to haunt Garden City.
Rafael Santos scored the go-ahead goal off a defensive miscue by the Broncbusters in the 83rd minute, and Cloud County, who is receiving votes in the national poll, narrowly defeated Garden City 2-1 Thursday night at Broncbuster Stadium.
"They're (Cloud County) a good team; fast and strong," Garden City Coach Charles Long said. "They have a ton of good players. But this was a really good experience for us to play against a team like this."
And to think, everything started out well for the Broncbusterrs.
David Amaro scored 6:51 into the match when he and Felipe Andrade executed a perfect give-and-go.
"David had a really good game," Long explained. Overall as a team, we played well. We just made a couple of mistakes."
Their first was giving Cloud County (2-0) a free opportunity in the 35th minute. Luiz Felibe's penalty kick tied the match 1-1.
A defensive struggle ensued in the second half before Santos's herocis in the final 10 minutes.
The Broncbusters fall to 2-1 on the season. They host Kansas Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Sunday at Broncbuster Stadium.
