Robinson pours in 44 as Broncobusters set 3-point mark in blowout win over Pratt
Pratt, KS-On Feb. 1, 1972, freshman guard Dana Albright poured in a program-record 45 points in a 92-67 route of Ark City. That scoring outburst surpassed Eddie Dater's 44-point explosion 17 years earlier vs. Hutchinson.
Fast forward to Wednesday night, nearly 52 years to the day, where Brody Robinson put a major stamp on Broncbuster history.
The sophomore point guard scored a career-best 44 points in 39 breathtaking minutes, Braxton Jones and Elijah Roberts combined for 35, and Garden City waxed Pratt, 98-76 at Dennis Lesh Arena.
The Broncbusters won for the eighth time in their last nine 10 games, improving to 14-7 overall and 10-5 in conference play.
"This was a special special performance," Head Coach, Rusty Elmore said afterwards. "Brody was incredible, period."
More like an exclamation mark.
Over the final 20 minutes, Robinson was brilliant, scoring 32 points on 11-of-14 from the field. And with the game hanging in the balance, the Chattanooga transfer canned three consecutive triples, which was all part of a stretch where he scored 21 straight Garden City points, turning a one-point deficit into a 79-68 lead with 6:08 remaining.
It was a stark reminder of just how lethal the diminutive point guard could be, nearly one-upping future Hall-of-Famer Lebron James, who tallied 25 straight points in the clinching game of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals vs. the Detroit Pistons.
Robinson's final stat line: 15-of-19 shooting, 6-of-9 from deep and 8-of-8 at the free throw line, sprinkling in eight assists and six rebounds in one of the most jaw-dropping performances of the year.
Jones scored 20 in 34 minutes for Garden City, which also set a program record by hitting 18 3-pointers (18-of-27). Roberts drilled five triples off the bench to finish with 15 points, Frazier added 10 points, and Charles Chukwu tallied four points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.
Depaul transfer, Zion Cruz finished with 18 points for Pratt, which fell to 6-14 overall and 4-11 in the Jayhawk.
