Garden City, KS-Tahlik Chavez had a season for the ages at Garden City. And that hard work is finally paying dividends.
On Tuesday, the freshman was named to the All-Jayhawk West second team.
Chavez will go down as one of the best offensive players to ever come through the Perryman Athletic Complex. He averaged 20.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and one steal per game, all while shooting 44 percent from downtown. He set the school record for 3's made in a season (108) and finished second in the league and eighth in the nation in that department. The sharpshooter also led the conference in scoring.
There were plenty of memorable moments during Chavez's freshman campaign, but the one that will go down as one of the best single-game performances in school history came on Feb. 15 at Dodge City. Trailing by 24 in the second half, Chavez put Garden City on his back, scoring 34 points and pulling the Broncbusters within two in the final seconds. His final stat line: 42 points, 10-of-24 shooting, 5-of-10 from 3 and 17-of-19 from the free throw line. The 17 made freebies set a single-game program record.
Chavez eclipsed 30 points four times, dropping 31 on Pratt on Jan. 22 before torching Hutchinson for 31 on Feb. 8 at the Sports Arena. His best shooting display came against Barton, where the freshman nailed a school-record nine 3's and poured in 31. In fact, he canned five or more 3's 10 times.
