Huslig named KJCCC Offensive player of the week
Garden City, KS-One midweek meeting changed everything.
When freshman quarterback Peyton Huslig walked into Jeff Sims' office with teammate Jayru Campbell three days before their showdown with Butler, a fly on the wall would have guessed that Campbell would start for Dwayne Lawson, who had violated team rules.
That's where things got interesting.
Campbell deferred to Coach Sims, who said his team would be better if Huslig was at quarterback and Campbell went to wide receiver.
The rest is history.
Huslig went on to complete 21-of-30 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns. It's the most td passes in a game since Todd Porter threw five vs. Iowa Central last year. That stat line earned the true freshman Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week Honors.
"I always prepare myself to be the starter," Huslig said. "Every practice; every day; that's my mindset."
The first-year signal caller exceeded his coach's expectations.
"It's the best first start of any quarterback I've ever seen in this conference," Sims said. "It's not that I didn't think he could do that. I expected him to play well, but that was an outstanding performance."
Huslig will be the starter in this week's clash with Coffeyville on Saturday night.
