Mistakes cost Garden City in game three loss to Southeast
By Mike Pilosof
Garden City, KS-It was just one of those days for Chris Finnegan's team.
The Broncbusters committed four errors, former Garden City player Brenden Anderson hit his first homer of the season, and Southeast took game three, 16-6 Sunday afternoon at Williams Stadium.
Garden City actually struck first in this one when Dakota Finley scored on a passed ball with two outs in the first. But that lead soon disappeared in the top of the second, thanks to errors by Ibrahim Rodriguez and Kyle Jameson. Eventually, starter Raul Garcia walked Zach Breeden; then gave up a two-run triple to Matt Keagan. The next batter, Cameron Blossom, got on thanks to another miscue that scored a run, putting Southeast in front 3-1. The Storm added to that cushion in the third when Anderson blasted a two-run bomb to right.
The Broncbusters worked their way back into the game in their half of the third. Rodriguez ripped a two-run triple; then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4. But with a chance to tie it, Jake Barber hit into a force play, ending the threat.
And Southeast made them pay for that missed opportunity.
The Storm added two more runs in the fifth when Blossom singled home one and Matt Keating scored on a pickoff attempt. But the fatal blow came in the sixth when Southeast plated five runs. At one stretch in the inning, four straight batters reached-Cade Moeller doubled, Cooper Prososki tripled, and Andersen singled to make it 10-4. Then in the seventh, reliever Nayton Agosto issued back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, Anderson added an RBI fielder's choice, Breeden singled to right, and Blossom earned a free pass with the sacks full, pushing the road team's advantage to 16-4.
Garcia took the loss for Garden City, giving up five runs (two earned) on two hits including Andersen's two-run jack. Finnegan then pieced together a combination of seven different relievers who allowed 11 total runs.
Simon Gradoville picked up the win in relief for Southeast, not allowing a hit in three innings. He struck out two and walked three. Andersen knocked in four runs while the six, seven and eight-hole hitters combined to go 6-for-11 at the dish with six runs scored and seven RBI.
