Arkansas City, KS-The Broncbusters couldn't have asked for a worst start. But all Chris Finnegan cares about is how his team ends the game. On Monday, Garden City sprinted to the finish line.
Dakota Finley and Corbin Truslow each mashed home runs, Jacob Douglas allowed just one run in relief, and Garden City stormed back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Marshalltown 9-5 at Tiger Ball Park.
"We had a lot of timely hits in that first game," Finnegan said afterwards.
Broncbuster starter Eric Heiman didn't have his best stuff, giving up two runs in the second and two more in the third, which included Ryan Carter's solo shot. But Garden City answered with a bang in the fourth. Truslow launched a leadoff homer over the right-field fence, Finely doubled home Turner McDonald, Colin Stone drew a bases-loaded walk, and two runs scored on Candido Encarnacion's error at short that put the Broncbusters up 5-4.
After Marshalltown evened the score in the fifth, Finley connected on a two-run bomb in the bottom half, giving Garden City the lead for good. Griffin Brunson and Jake Barber scored on wild pitches in the sixth, and Douglas worked around a single and hit batsmen in the seventh to get Encarnacion to fly out to end the game.
Douglas picked up the win in relief, striking out five while not allowing an earned run. Heiman yielded four runs on six hits in four innings.
Blake Lindsey was the losing pitcher, giving up five runs on four hits in three innings. He and starter Jacob Everaert were tagged for home runs.
