Broncbusters fall in four to No. 6 Colby
Colby, KS-It's been a tough stretch for Garden City.
Celia Mbaya and Viola Giangreco combined for 36 kills, Camila Canedo had 37 digs, and No. 6 Colby defeated the Broncbusters in four sets, 16-25, 25-22, 11-25, 9-25 Saturday afternoon at the Colby Events Center.
Julia Brazil totaled nine kills for Garden City, which lost for the third time in their last four matches to drop to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in conference. Vitoria Reis had 15 assists.
"We're just not getting much offensive productivity right now," first-year Head Coach, Jacob Sander said.
Garden City played even with the Trojans for a good chunk of the opening set. But with the game tied at 13, Colby answered with a 12-3 run, which was aided by six Broncbuster attack errors.
"We have to be able to run our offense, and the last couple of matches have definitely been a struggle," Sander added.
Garden City rebounded in the second, building a five-point cushion following Carly Lang's kill. After Colby sliced the advantage to one, Andrea Djordjevic stopped the rally with a crosscourt spike, and Viola Giangreco committed an attack error that evened the match, 1-1.
But it was all Trojans from there.
A 7-0 burst midway through the third set gave the home team a 14-5 advantage. Lang's attack was blocked by Amanda Caputi and Alexandra Workman, and Colby had a 10-point lead.
The Trojans coasted in the final frame.
Another 7-0 surge in the fourth put Colby ahead, 18-5. Eventually the Trojans pushed it to match point where Giangreco hammered home one of her 16 kills.
"We show glimpses, but we have to be more consistent," Sander said.
Mbaya led the way with 20 kills for Colby, which won for the 12th time in their last 13 matches to improve to 16-2 overall and 6-1 in conference.
