
Broncbusters fall in four in Dodge City
Dodge City, KS-37 is not a number Jake Sander takes lightly, especially after Wednesday night.
Dodge City took advantage of 37 Broncbuster miscues, Azra Arslanoglu had 16 kills, and the Conquistadors beat Garden City in four sets 25-19, 13-25, 14-25, 23-25.
Julia Brazil had 13 kills for Garden City, which dropped to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in conference. Vitoria Stedile recorded 32 digs, and Vitoria Reis chipped in 17 assists and five digs.
Things started off well for Jacob Sander's team, who finished the opening set on a 9-3 run capped by Brazil's kill that put Garden City up, 1-0.
But the match got away from the Broncbusters in the second.
The Conquistadors blitzed Garden City with a 16-6 surge turning a 9-7 game into a runaway. Arslanoglu punched home a kill from the left side, and Kamalei Wassman dropped in an ace to even the match, 1-1.
"We played really well in the first set, and then not so well the rest of the way," Sander said. "We just have to find that level of consistency."
With the game tied at nine in the third, Dodge City again hit Garden City with an avalanche, outscoring them 16-5 the rest of the way. Beatriz Cornachini hammered home a pair of kills late including on set point to give the Conquistadors a 2-1 edge.
Trailing 18-11 in the fourth, Garden City stormed back to tie things up following Camila Pereira's kill down the middle. But Arslanoglu answered with a spike, and Amariah White blocked Brazil's attack to end the match.
Leisey Keli'I had 17 digs for Dodge City, which won its fourth game in a row to improve to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Hayden Pinard added 25 assists.
