
Broncbusters sweep Gillette; snap skid
McCook, NEB-The Broncbusters rebounded in a nice way on Friday.
Julia Brazil had 11 kills, Tola Maczka added 27 assists, and Garden City beat Gillette in three sets, 25-17, 25-16, and 25-14 at the McCook Invitational. The Broncbusters snapped a three-match losing streak, improving to 7-4 overall.
Garden City, which had dropped six straight sets entering Friday's opener, only trailed briefly in the first frame. After a pair of errors by the Pronghorns, Brazil and Apolline Lepuissant dropped in a pair of service aces, Maczka set up Carly Lang for a kill, and the Broncbusters were up 15-11. Gillette then committed five attack errors over the next seven points as Garden City closed the set on an 18-10 run.
In the second, Lang's kill broke a 7-7 tie. She added another spike, Zoe Van Waaijen committed an attack error, and Lang tallied an ace for a 14-9 lead that forced the Pronghorns to call timeout. Following the stoppage, the Broncbusters answered with a 9-4 surge to open a 10-point cushion. Lang then finished off the set with a kill for a 2-0 advantage.
The Broncbusters cruised in the third. A one-point affair turned into a runaway thanks to a 17-7 run. Lepuissant had a kill, Brazil recorded an ace, and Maczka blocked a Gillette attack for match point.
Lang finished with nine kills for Garden City, which posted its fourth straight-set victory of the season.
