
Mutai impresses again; Broncbusters wrap up Region VI Championships
Garden City, KS-The Garden City track teams competed in the Region VI Championships on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Broncbuster Stadium with the women's team finishing eighth and the men's team coming in ninth.
Women's Recap:
-Shareen Cheruiyot made a statement by winning the 3k Steeplechase in a new school record and personal best time of 11:32.20. Her mark put her 2nd in the nation in the event. Teammate Cielo Garcia placed 8th with a time of 14:07.68, snagging some team points for the Broncbusters.
Valentine Lagat ran a smart race and placed 2nd in the 10k with a time of 42:38.20, while Cheruiyot and Lagat returned to action in the 5k, both placing well. Cheruiyot placed 3rd in the event with a time of 19:35.20, and Valentine placed 6th with a time of 19:47.91.
Diondra Wilborn placed 5th in the 100-meter hurdles; clocking in a 14.67.
McKenna Jagels had a productive weekend. In her debut in the Heptathlon, she battled through seven events to earn a 7th place finish with a score 3094 points. Jagels also came back to place 7th in the Pole Vault, clearing a mark of 2.56 meters.
In the team scoring, the Women's team placed 8th with 38 points. In the Jayhawk West Conference, they finished 6th with 53 points.

Men's Recap:
Dennis Mutai took first in the 5k, winning the event with a time of 15:01.72. Teammate Kelvin Cheruiyot placed 5th with a time of 15:43.92. Both men also competed in the 10k and walked away with top 5 finishes. Mutai took 2nd with a time of 30:43.38, while Cheruiyot placed 4th with a time of 31:04.91.
Debonaire Williams took 4th in the grueling 10-event Decathlon with a score of 5762 points. Teammates Cameron Collins (9th, 5375) and Elisha Handsaker (10th, 5239) both finished with personal best in the decathlon.
The 4x100 meter relay (Ferguson, Wagner, Nava, Powell) placed 4th, clocking in a 40.94.
Shaun Johnson took 6th in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in a new personal best time of 14.70. His time was tops in the Jayhawk West.
Amari Hampton placed 6th in the high jump, clearing a mark of 1.92 meters. His performance also led the Jayhawk West.
The 4x400 meter relay (Hampton, Thomas, Powell, Roberson) placed 7th, running a time of 3:20.22, while the 4x800 meter relay team(Ayala, Veloz, James, Armstrong) raced well and snuck in an 8thplace finish with a time of 8:30.74.
Jereun Wagner had a phenomenal day in the 100m, clocking in a new personal best of 10.20 in the prelims and coming back with a 10.29 in the finals, good enough for 8th place in the region. His performance was the top time in the Jayhawk West in the event.
In the team standings, the Broncbusters placed 9th in the region with 86 points. In the Jayhawk West, the team placed 4th with 116 points.
