
Garden City produces more national qualifiers at Broncbuster Invite
Garden City, KS-The Garden City men's and women's track teams wrapped up competition in the Broncbuster Invite on Saturday.
Men's recap
Kelvin Cheruiyot opened the day with a historic run in the 3000-meter steeplechase. He won the event in 9:41.11, which not only qualified for nationals but also set a new school record in the event. Teammate Zaccerie Penka placed 3rd with a big personal best improvement, clocking in a time of 11:08.46.
Dennis Mutai was stellar once again with a first-place finish in the 1500-meter run. Mutai clocked in a time of 3:55.63 which set a new school record in the event as well as qualifies him for nationals.
Jereun Wagner led the Broncbusters in a successful showing in the 100-meter dash, placing first with a new personal best time of 10.43. He also came back and won the 200-meter dash, clocking in a time of 21.19. His performance was good enough to qualify for the national championship meet.
The Broncbusters swept the 400-meter dash, with Ray'Sean Thomas leading the way with a time of 49.94. Maliek Roberson placed 2nd with 50.03, and Isaiah Armstrong placed 3rd with a time of 50.35.
Shaun Johnson won the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in a new personal best time of 15.12. Teammate Jockque Randell placed 3rd with a time of 16.13.
Jaden Powell won the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in a new season best time of 56.44. Johnson was close behind, placing 3rd with a time of 58.23.
Amari Hampton won the high jump with a personal best time mark of 1.93 meters, while Vaai Seumalo came away with two first place finishes in the throws. He won the shot put with a mark of 12.71 meters and then came back with a personal best performance in the Hammer, throwing a mark of 38.22 meters.
Conditions were less than ideal for the 5000-meter run but Jose Garcia gutted out a 3rd place finish with a time of 18:27.88.
In the Decathlon, Debonaire Williams won the event with a score of 5543 points. Cameron Collins placed 2nd with a personal best score of 5176 as well as had personal best in the Pole Vault and 110-meter hurdles. Elisha Handsaker had a solid debut, placing 3rd with a score of 5036. Handsaker also set personal best performances in the Pole Vault, Discus, and 100 meter hurdles.

Shareen Cheruiyot made history in the 3000-meter steeplechase. She won the event in a time of 11:37.88, which broke the previous school record by 40 seconds as well as qualifies her for the national championship meet. Teammate Cielo Garcia placed 2nd in the event with a personal best time of 13:43.81.
McKenna Jagels also set new heights to the historic track program, setting a school record in the Pole Vault, clearing a mark of 2.90 meters. Her performance was also a first-place finish in the event. Jagels also came back and placed 3rd in the high jump with a mark of 1.35 meters.
Erica Davis had a very successful day, coming away with two top-2 performances. She started all with a 2nd placed finish in the 100-meter dash, clocking in a personal best time of 12.20. Davis later came back and placed 1stin the 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 25.06.
Diamond Choate won the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 1:13.91. She also placed 3rd in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.51.
Diondra Wilborn won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.34.
Wind conditions put a damper on the 5000-meter run, but Valentine Lagat ran a commanding race and won the event with a 19:40.03.
The Broncbuster Throwers had a very successful day. Heidy Aguilar won the Hammer Throw with a new personal best of 33.73 meters, and teammate Serena Degollado placed 2nd with a mark of 24.61 meters. Degollado came back and placed 2nd in the Shot Put, marking 9.54 meters, with Aguilar close behind with a mark of 9.52 meters.
Meagan Burkhart placed 2nd in her Heptathlon debut, scoring 2673 points in the event. Burkhart also set personal best marks in the Javelin and Long Jump.
