
Garden City posts a multitude of personal bests at JUCO Invite
Pittsburg, KS-The Broncbuster track teams competed at the JUCO Invite at Pittsburg State University on Sunday.
Men's Recap
Cameron Collins improved his personal best shot put, tossing a throw of 11.31 meters. He followed that up with a season-best 2.93 in the pole vault. Teammate Debonaire Williams took fifth in the pole vault with a PR of 3.68 meters.
Tahj Ferguson and Amari Hampton both made the finals in the long jump, posting marks of 6.52 and 6.54 meters finishing fifth and sixth. Darren Sanders tallied a season best 5.87. He and Ferguson then took home top-10 finishes in the triple jump. Sanders came in eighth (13.19 meters) in his debut, and Ferguson was 10th (12.79).
Shaun Johnson paced the Broncbusters in the 60-meter hurdles, placing seventh in the preliminaries with a new PR of 8.63. Jaden Powell took 10th (8.85).
Jereun Wagner had the top time for Garden City in the 60-meter dash, finishing second in the finals (6.94). Williams and Ray'Sean Thomas both had personal-best times of 7.25 and 7.31.
Wagner also led the Broncbusters in the 200 meters, bringing home second place (21.88). Fabian Nava (23.30), Thomas (23.48), and Lemar Oubre (25.12) all ran personal-best times.
Maliek Roberson took fourth in the 600-meter dash, running a time of 1:23.12. Holcomb-native Isaiah Armstrong took sixth (1:24.16), Elisha Handsaker was 10th (1:28), Etienne James (1:29.04), and Matiyron Easley (1:35.73) posted PRs.
In the 1000-meter run, Angel Ayala was the top finisher with a new season-best time of 2:41.70, which was good enough for fifth place. Jose "Froy" Ruiz took ninth (2:46.39), Zac Penka (2:48.93), Matt Veloz (2:49.69), Garrett Klinger (2:54.25), Daniel Aguilar (2:54.78), Jose Garcia (3:02.83), Edgar Ruiz (3:04.01), and Cyle Peterson (3:10.81) all had personal best performances in the event.
Dennis Mutai added another individual crown to his resume, finishing first in the men's mile with a time of 4:26.89-just a few seconds shy of the national qualifying mark. Ruiz took seventh with a PR of 4:49.73-good enough for eighth, Daniel Aguilar (4:52.60), Veloz (4:56.55), Jose Garcia (5:03.02), and Edgar Ruiz (5:15.85) all ran personal bests.
Kelvin Cheruiyot fell just short of hitting the national qualifying time in the 3000-meter run, posting a time of 8:53.96-a new personal best and good for second place.
Ricardo Mijares debuted in the 5k, finishing with a time of 17:50.32. In the men's distance medley relay (Ruiz, Armstrong, Ayala, and Cheruiyot) fell just shy of the national qualifying mark, taking fifth (10:55.40). The 4x400 relay team (Jaden Powell, Roberson, Wagner, and Hampton) ran a season-best time of 3:22.34, finishing third.
Women's Recap
Serena Degollado paced the Broncbusters in the throwing events, posting a PR of 12.21 meters in the weight throw and 10.09 meters in the shot put. Heidy Aguilar's 9.87-meter toss in the shot put was a new personal best while Meagan Burkhart threw a PR of 7.47 meters.
McKenna Jagels also had a productive day in the pole vault with a new school record-clearing 2.80 meters; good enough for fifth. She later came back and placed 10th in the high jump with a mark of 1.35 meters.
Diamond Choate took 10th in the long jump (4.27 meters), Areli Moreno and Burkhart made their debuts in the event, jumping 4.18 and 3.78 meters.
Diondra Wilborn led Garden City in the 60-meter hurdles, taking third in the finals (8.80). Choate finished 10th (10.89).
Erica Davis was sixth in the 60-meter dash finals (8.11); then she and Wilborn posted top-10 finishes in the 200-meter dash. Wilborn's sixth-place time of 25.93 was a personal best, and Davis placed ninth with a 26.75.
Rebecca Potts took 10th in the 1000-meter run, posting a time of 4:03.61 and Shareen Cheruiyot finished third in the mile (5:36.16).
