Garden City, KS-Two critical mistakes within 60 seconds of each other cost Garden City big time on Saturday.
Hina Suzuki broke a scoreless tie with two goals in 34 seconds as No. 10 Cowley handed Garden City its second straight defeat, 2-0 at Broncbuster Stadium.
Garden City, which dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in Jayhawk play, played the highly ranked Tigers to a draw for 66 minutes. But a critical defensive mistake in the back half allowed Evellyn Borges to slip a pass to a wide-open Suzuki, who slid the ball past keeper, Ciah-Lilly Rudkin. Then, following the kickoff, Suzuki maneuvered down field, beating Rudkin again in a one-on-one situation for a 2-0 lead.
"We have to stop compounding mistakes," Head Coach, Corey Bryant said afterwards. "We made the first mistake, but we still had plenty of time to figure some things out."
The Broncbusters had a golden chance to get on the board in the 67th minute when Charlotte Sayer found herself open in the box. But her right-footed rocket glanced off the right arm of Cowley keeper, Marin Peoples. It was one of only four shots on goal that Garden City attempted all night.
Rudkin recorded seven saves for the Broncbusters, who were outshot, 17-4.
