Broncbusters watch as Hutch walks them off
Hutchinson, KS-Another missed opportunity for Garden City.
Brooke Backhaus drove in four runs including the game-winning RBI single in the seventh as Hutchinson snuck past the Broncbusters, 10-9 in game two Tuesday afternoon at Fun Valley.
Garden City (14-12, 6-6) turned a 7-4 deficit into a 9-7 advantage with a five-run fifth inning. Maria Avendano Fori knocked in Kenzie Garza with a base hit to right-center, which was followed by a pair of Blue Dragon errors that allowed both Daryelin Rivas Chavez and Avendano Fori to score. Keiry Abreu added an RBI groundout, and the Broncbusters had a two-run cushion.
But as has been the case in a few instances this year, Garden City failed to hold the lead. In the seventh, Chiara Olison surrendered an RBI single to Tailor Golly to make it a one-run game. Moments later, Avendano Fori committed an error in center field that allowed the tying run to move into scoring position. That's when Head Coach, Belinda Hendrix replaced her starter with Ashlyn Powell, who immediately served up a 2-0 fastball that Backhaus smashed into left for a two-RBI game winner.
It was a sour ending to a game in which the Broncbusters had every chance to put it away. Olison gave up 10 runs but only five of them were earned thanks to a season-high six errors.
All things started off well for Garden City when Maysen Kurene-Iwikau tattooed a two-run shot in the top of the first. Avendano-Fori then connected on her team-leading 14th homer of the year in the third: a towering two-run bomb to left-center.
But the Blue Dragons did some major damage in the bottom of the first-plating five funs.
Morgan Tomlinson picked up the win in relief for the Blue Dragons, holding Garden City without a hit over two innings. She improved to 9-2.
