
Garden City smashes No. 25 Trinidad State
Trinidad, CO-Yina Ballesta Vargas tossed a one-hitter, Maria Avendano Fori smacked two home runs, and Garden City dismantled No. 25 Trinidad State, 15-0 in five innings on Sunday afternoon.
Daryelin Rivas Chavez, Maysen Kurene-Iwikau, and Kenzie Garza all homered for Garden City, which won its fifth straight game to improve to 5-4 overall. Fori knocked in five runs, and Chiara Olison had three hits.
Vargas was sensational again retiring the first 11 batters she faced before Mia Bailey singled with two outs in the fourth.
The Broncbusters went to work right away with Chavez sending a double to the gap; then stealing third to begin the game. Kurene-Iwikau smoked an RBI extra base hit, and Olison singled home a run to make it 3-0.
In the second, Fori and Kurene-Iwikau smashed two-out solo homers before Fori went yard again in the third. Chavez also homered as part of a five-run frame that put Garden City up, 12-0. Garza then hit a two-run homer in the fourth.
Vargas, who struck out six, improved to 3-2 in the circle. She's posted a 1.73 earned run average in 24.1 innings worked this season.
Trinidad State (4-9) starter, Kelsey Grant allowed six runs on five hits in just 1.2 innings. Danae Chavira surrendered three home runs, and Hailey Maes gave up three runs on three hits over two innings of relief.
