Broncbusters claim district title; qualify for nationals
Kansas City, MO-Garden City Golf Coach, Jaden Chavez was adamant that his team's time was coming.
After a runner-up and third-place finish in the Jayhawk and Region VI Championships-the Broncbusters rode the coattails of Oliver Crowley and freshman Ilan Dufrenoy, who placed first and second respectivel, helping lead Garden City to the overall team title at the 2025 Men's Central District Championships at Tiffany Greens Golf Course.
Dufrenoy, who finished third in regions and second behind Hutchinson's Charlie Box in the Jayhawk Championships in Manhattan two weeks ago, was 2-over, lost to Oliver Crowley in a two-hole playoff in Tuesday's final round. And despite a subpar outing in the third, his 5-under, 67 on Monday set the tone for the entire tournament. At one point, he was 8-under in the first round after four straight birdies on 11, 12, 13, and 14. He ended up bogeying two out of the final three holes.
"Our first round was definitely what propelled us," Chavez said. "And the conditions were not ideal."
Dufrenoy played mistake free golf on the front nine in the second round. Then he birdied 11 before he two-putted 12 and 13. He also bogeyed 16 to finish the day 2-over. In the third though, the freshman bounced back from a 4-over on the front to finish plus-1 down the stretch, which included a birdie on the 395-yard par-4 17th.
"One round can set you up for success, and that's what Ilan did for us," Chavez added.
Meantime Crowley played consistently the entire tournament. He was 1-over in the first and second rounds before shooting even par on Tuesday. His only real mistake came when he doubled No. 5 and bogeyed 6. But he responded with a birdie on the par-4 seventh to finish even on the front. He shot 36 on the back.
Jack Dyer, last year's lone national qualifier, also posted a top-10 finish, coming in at 7-over. He was plus-2 on Tuesday. He was 2-over in round one where he parred 16 of the 18 hoes. His lone blemish was a bogey on five. He added a birdie on NO. 6.
Miguel Silveira took 19th at 14-over.
