Dyer in 15th place after two rounds of the NJCAA National Championships
Hobbs, NM-A lot can change in 24 hours, especially when mother nature has her way.
Gusty winds were the story on Wednesday, and Jack Dyer wasn't the only one who fell victim. In the end however, the freshman's second round will be remembered more for missed opportunities than anything else.
A day after posting one of his best rounds of the season, Dyer put together an up-and-down second round, which came down to an uneven short game, an area that the freshman thrived in on Tuesday. He finished at plus-4 and is currently tied for 15th place at even par at the 2024 Men's Golf National Championships at Rockwind Community Links.
"I still have a lot of golf left," Dyer said. "We get back at it tomorrow and Friday."
Truth be told, Dyer's round, minus four holes, would have been good enough to keep him in contention. But after parring the first two holes, which happened to include a missed five-foot putt for bridie on No. 2, Dyer overshot the green on his approach on a short par-3. His second shot, which landed on the backside of the green, fell victim to the wind as it rolled all the way back past the hole. After his third shot got him within five feet of the cup, his bogey putt rimmed out and he ended up doubling the hole.
"That's golf for you; that's how it works," Head Coach, Jaden Chavez explained with a shrug. "But he still has two rounds to make up some ground."
Dyer appeared to find his groove on No. 4 when he struck a tremendous chip shot that landed on the green before rolling within eight feet of the hole. He followed that up with a pair of birdies that put him back at 4-under.
He was level through nine.
But the par 3's ate most of the golfers alive on Wednesday, and Dyer was no exception. He two-putted No. 10, which dropped him to 2-under. Then after a birdie on 11, he bogeyed the par-3 15th before a double on 16.
Dyer is set to tee off at 7 am on Thursday.
