Garden City, KS-Tahlik Chavez has been on an absolute tear as of late. And the rest of the league has taken notice.
On Tuesday, the freshman guard was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the week.
Chavez averaged 30 points, 7.3 rebounds and three assists during a three-game run. He dropped 27 in a 90-76 victory over Northwest Tech on Monday; then scored 21 in an 81-76 loss to Pratt on Wednesday. But he saved his best performance for last, netting a career-high 42 points in 38 minutes vs. Dodge City on Saturday, nearly singlehandedly erasing a 24-point second-half deficit. Chavez scored 34 over the game's final 18 minutes while pulling down a team-best 10 rebounds. It was his third double-double of the season.
To date, Chavez is averaging 21 points and six rebounds per game while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3. He's scored 30 or more four times with 18 20-point games. He currently leads the Jayhawk Conference in scoring and is fourth in the nation in made 3's.
But there's more to it than that. As a first-year player, Chavez now owns the program's single-season record for 3-pointers made along with the single-game mark for free throws made and attempted, going 17-of-19 vs. Dodge City. In addition, he needs 109 points to become the all-time single-season leader in points scored. Virgil Vaughn scored 694 during the 1984-1985 season.
The Broncbusters return to action on Wednesday against 24-4 Colby at Conestoga Arena. Tipoff set for 8 p.m.
