Broncbusters offense soars in win over Air Force Prep

Colorado Springs, CO-Sometimes the biggest plays come when you're least expecting it. Such was the case on Friday afternoon.

Jakobe Sheffield's two-point score on a blocked extra point in the fourth quarter helped seal the Broncbusters 29-20 victory over Air Force Prep at Huskies Stadium.

"I'm glad we got the win," Head Coach Jeff Sims said afterwards. "But we knew it would be a challenge. This game was scheduled late; it was a short week playing on a Friday."

All of those variables considered, Garden City (6-3, 4-2) looked sharp early. Terry Wilson hit Remi Simmons for a 25-yard score before the redshirt freshman quarterback connected with Daniel Davis on a 70-yard touchdown that made it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

"It was really hard to keep our team consistent throughout this game," Sims said. "They were in and out of focus."

Focused or not, the Broncbusters offense kept rolling in the second. Running back Alaric Williams blasted in from two yards, giving Garden City a 21-0 edge.

"Air Force Prep is a different animal to play," Sims explained. "We're playing on a practice field, and there was no play clock."

Garden City's lone mistake in the first half came when Air Force Prep blocked James Dall's punt, and the Huskies recovered it at the 3-yard line. They scored three plays later to cut the Broncbusters lead to 21-7 at the half.

"We made some mistakes in this game," Sims said. "But give credit to Air Force Prep. They've got very good coaches, and their guys played hard."

Garden City extended the lead in the third when Wilson zipped a seven-yard scoring toss to Charles West for a 27-7 advantage.

But Air Force Prep made things very interesting in the fourth. Backup quarterback Nolan McDonald hit Brandon Lewis for two long touchdown passes: one from 34 yards and the other from 57 to make it 27-20 with just over a minute left. That's when the Broncbusters got a massive push on the extra point, blocking it before Sheffield scooped it up and ran 90 yards for the two-pointer that sealed the game.

"These guys know the standards that we expect," Sims said. "We were winning the game 27-7 and put some other guys in."

Wilson finished the day 14-of-27 for 178 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. West carried the ball 15 times for 80 yards and a score while Davis reeled in three balls for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Air Force Prep dropped to 0-5 on the season.
