Broncbusters take series finale
Garden City, KS-Mason Tafoya continued his hot streak belting his second homer of the season, Alexander Paniagua earned his first win on the bump, and Garden City salvaged their weekend series with Amarillo with a 10-6 win in Saturday's finale at Williams Stadium.
Brittain Brewer drove in three runs, and Akoi Burton went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Broncbusters, which improved to 7-7 overall.
After dropping the first three games of the series, Garden City came out punching in this one. Roy Higinbotham's RBI double in the first gave the home team a 2-0 advantage. Brewer added an RBI groundout in the second to make it 3-0.
Amarillo crawled back to take the lead in the third, thanks to leadoff homer by Aidan Young and a grand slam by Brooks Carter.
But unlike game three, where a seven-run seventh ended any chance of a rally, the Broncbusters took the lead for good in the fourth. Justin Bush ripped a run-scoring single to center, and Sage Hurley stroked an RBI base hit to left to give Garden City a 6-5 lead.
Then in the fifth, with Bush at first, Tafoya got ahold of curveball and crushed it over the wall in left for a two-run homer that made it 10-6.
(Akoi) Burton scored three times for Garden City, and Paniagua struck out four in three innings of relief.
Ja'Marcus Smith took the loss for Amarillo, allowing three runs on five hits in two innings.
