Broncbusters squander chance late; loses to Southeast in game two
Garden City, KS-First-year Head Coach, Josh Oller had his arms crossed against his chest as he watched stoically while his team, which had battled back from a four-run deficit, had just tied the game on Wyatt Anderson's RBI fielder's choice in the sixth.
But after putting the go-ahead runners into scoring position, what's happened so often during this young season, Garden City failed to come through.
It ended up costing them again.
Max Peterson smashed two home runs including a go-ahead solo shot in the seventh, as Southeast beat the Broncbusters, 7-6 in game two Monday afternoon at Williams Stadium.
Peterson's first round tripper came with two outs in the third off JP Harris, who relieved starter Kaden Johnson after he failed to make it out of the first. It gave the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage.
Kameron Arrington added a two-run single in the fourth, and Will Barrett scored on a wild pitch to stretch Southeast's lead to 5-1.
Garden City (1-8, 0-0) though fought back with a two-run bottom half. Dawson Stutz drove Kalen Bing around with an RBI groundout, and Brett Barber scored on Arrington's fielding error to pull the Broncbusters to within two. An inning later, Stutz struck again with a long, two-run single that tied the game.
After Southeast went back in front in the sixth, Anderson tallied the equalizer with a run-scoring fielder's choice. But Garden City stranded their two go-ahead runners, punctuating a day in which the home team went 1-for-9 with men at second and third.
Broncbuster starter (Kaden) Johnson allowed one run and walked two in 2/3 of an inning. Harris tossed 2 2/3, yielding four runs on three hits, and Reid struck out four. Andrew Bowman took the loss, giving up a towering home run to right-center field.
Brandon Lundquist picked up the win for the Bobcats, allowing one run on one hit. Cody Bruss recorded the save.
