
Broncbuster offense springs to life in blowout win over WNCC
Garden City, KS-Jake Wiley and Dawson Stutz each knocked in three runs, Matthew Lorencz picked up his first win of the year on the bump, and Garden City snapped a four-game losing streak with a 15-5 victory over Western Nebraska Monday afternoon at Williams Stadium. The Broncbusters improved to 7-28 overall.
Lorencz, who only pitched two innings, gave up two runs on two hits and struck out one. His lone blemish came when he served up a two-run bomb to Bryce Peterson in the first inning. But after that, he retired four of the final five hitters he faced including a one-two-three top-half of the second.
Meantime, the Broncbusters took the lead for good in the bottom of the first. Brett Barber walked with the bases loaded, Stutz smacked a two-run single, and AJ Mueller plated two with a base hit to left field to make it 5-2. Connor Thompson added an RBI single in the second, Nick Barber punched one through the middle in the third, and Wiley crushed a bases-clearing double to give Caleb Cox's team an 11-5 cushion after four.
In the fifth, Stutz walked with the bases loaded, and Caleb Metzen hit a sacrifice fly. Brett Barber then ended the game with an RBI double in the sixth.
(Brett) and Nick Barber combined to go 4-for-9 at the plate with four runs scored and an RBI for Garden City, which improved to 4-12 at home. Konner Hatfield stretched his hitting streak to seven games finishing 2-for-3. It was his 13th multi-hit game of the season.
Mytchell Pollock allowed six runs on three hits for the Cougars, which dropped to 5-26 overall.
