Dodge City rolls in game two
Dodge City, KS-Andrew Detlefsen smacked two more homers, Dodge City hit four as a team, and the Conquistadors routed Garden City, 13-2 in game two of the four-game set Wednesday afternoon at Cavalier Field. It was the Broncbusters fourth straight loss, dropping Caleb Cox's team to 4-17 overall and 2-4 in Jayhawk play.
Matthew Lorencz, who pitched a gem in a loss to Colby last week, gave up 13 runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings. He served up four home runs and walked three batters.
It also didn't help that the offense went silent producing only seven hits, three of which came off the bat of Brett Barber, who finished 3-for-4. The rest of the team though was a combined 4-for-21.
As they did in the series opener, the Broncbusters struck first in the first inning. Barber ripped a double to center, and Quinn Gundelfinger knocked him in. But with the bases loaded, PJ Alvarez, who homered in game one, lined out to center field.
What a missed opportunity that was.
Detlefsen's towering three-run homer in the bottom half gave the Conquistadors the lead for good. Later in the inning, Kaelen Bing misplayed a ball in right, allowing three more to score to make it 6-1. Caden Matlon drilled a two-run homer in the third and Detlefsen and Brian Hallum each hit two-run jacks as part of a five-run fourth.
Michael Lopez earned his first win of the year, scattering four hits in five innings while fanning four.
Lorencz dropped to 0-5 for Garden City.
