Broncbusters drop series finale to Colby
Colby, KS-Aaron Vulcano went 3-for-4 including a home run, Lucas DeJong knocked in four, and Colby topped Garden City, 14-10 in Saturday's series finale at Young Memorial Field. The loss dropped the Broncbusters to 4-14 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Starter Stephen Roozendal never made it out of the third inning, allowing seven runs on four hits with four walks. Local product Kaden Johnson looked razor sharp, fanning six batters in just two innings of scoreless relief.
Quinn Gundelfinger's RBI groundout and Dawson Stutz's run-scoring single gave the Broncbusters a 2-0 lead after one. They made it 3-0 an inning later when Brett Barber drew a bases-loaded walk.
But Colby went to work in the bottom of the second scoring five runs. Then in the third, DeJong hammered a Caleb Metzen off-speed pitch and sent it over the center-field wall for an 8-3 Trojan advantage. Gavin Galenza added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 9-3.
Garden City got right back in the game in the fourth when Gundelfinger connected on a three-homer to cut the deficit to two. PJ Alvarez followed with an RBI double, and the Broncbusters were down, 9-8.
But Vulcano went deep in the fourth and nine-hole hitter, Olivier Valle cranked a solo shot in the fifth. Vulcano then roped a run-scoring triple in the sixth followed by Joe Gagnon's RBI single and Lucas Vincent's RBI double that gave Colby a 14-8 lead.
The Broncbusters responded with a run in the seventh and another in the ninth when Konner Hatfield scored on a wild pitch. But with a chance to bring the tying run to the plate, Alvarez grounded out to short to end the game.
Colby starter Ryan Sullivan allowed three runs on three hits in three innings. He struck out four and walked four.
Connor Camden, Hatfield, Gundelfinger, and Alvarez all recorded multi-hit games. Gundelfinger finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.
