Broncbusters torch Clarendon; improve to 5-1 overall
Trinidad, CO-Garden City made this one look easy.
Tola Maczka had 36 assists, Julia Brazil tallied 17 kills, and the Broncbusters beat Clarendon in three sets, 25-18, 25-15, and 25-12 at Scott Gym. Garden City improved to 5-1 overall.
The Broncbusters were never threatened in this one, jumping out to 12-3 lead in the first after Maczka used a backwards set to set up Brazil for a crosscourt hammer. Even after Clarendon cut the lead to five following Maczka's setting error, it never felt like the Bulldogs ever had any momentum. Brazil followed with a kill, and Jelena Milovanovic tapped one over the net for set point.
"This was a solid win for us," Head Coach, Patrick Hiltz said. "It was a little sloppy at times, but winning is winning."
Garden City led by as many as 10 in the second and built an early 9-4 lead in the third. Maczka used a dump set followed by a net violation and a Pinar Dugeroglu ace to put the Broncbusters up by seven. Carly Lang then found a soft spot in the defense, Abigail Ligthner tapped one over the tape, and Dugeroglu rejected a Clarendon attack for a 19-9 advantage. After Vitoria Stedile's service error, the Broncbusters closed by scoring the final four points, marking their third sweep in their last four matches.
"After a rather 'off' performance by her own standards, it was really nice to see Julia bounce back and have a great match," Hiltz explained. "She was on point in all aspects of this match."
Milovanovic had even kills for Garden City, which has dropped only four sets in their first six matches. Dugeroglu had three blocks.
