Kansas City, KS-The Broncbuster women's soccer team made history on Saturday.
Samantha Medina scored twice, and Garden City won its first-ever playoff game with a 3-2 victory over No. 11 Kansas City in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament. The Broncbusters advanced to the semifinals to play Cowley in Ark City on Wednesday.
The Broncbusters, which posted their first victory over a ranked opponent, put pressure on the Blue Devils all afternoon. Andrew Aguilar's beautiful cross set up Jessica Newton for a goal in the sixth minute of the contest.
Garden City threatened again later in the first period when Newton dropped off a perfect touch pass to sophomore Samantha Medina, who lofted the ball over goalie, Karli Angle's head for a 2-0 advantage in the 21st minute.
It was 2-1 at the half.
The score stayed that way until the 70th minute when Medina struck again. After the Blue Devils failed to clear a ball, Newton rolled another perfect pass to the sophomore, who blasted one home in the top-left corner to put Garden City up 3-1.
Kansas City managed to make it interesting after Jordan Bedard scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 75th minute. But the Broncbuster defense held the rest of the way, pushing Garden City within 90 minutes of its first-ever region title game.
