Shorthanded Garden City storms back to beat Seward County
Garden City, KS-One look at the box score of Wednesday night's match between Garden City and Seward County and one would think there was nothing impressive about the Broncbusters one-goal victory. But a deeper dive into the weeds tells a story of one of the most impressive wins of the Corey Bryant era.
Playing two players down because of a pair of ejections, Garden City stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Seward County, 3-2 at Broncbuster Stadium. The Broncbusters improved to 5-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
The Broncbusters lost two of their top returners from last season six minutes into the second half after Samantha Medina and Abbeigh Bland were involved in an on-field altercation with Seward County's Karla Morales. After some pushing and shoving, the official gave all three players red cards.
Interesting enough, playing shorthanded, the Broncbusters dominated the rest of the way.
Jessica Newton scored an unassisted goal three minutes after the triple ejection. Then, in the 71st minute, the Saints knocked the ball into their own goal, tying the match 2-2. Moments later, Newton struck again, putting the Broncbusters in front with an absolute laser from just inside the box.
It was a great finish to an inauspicious start. Seward County scored two minutes into the match when Natoya Atkinson blasted a ball from 30 yards out past Karime Silva, who started the first half for Ava Wilson. Less than eight minutes later, Raquel Guzman made it 2-0 when she converted a line-drive right-footed boot into the right corner of the net.
Garden City outshot Seward County, 18-11. Silva had three saves for the Broncbusters, which won their third match in a row.
