Broncbusters close season with win at Coffeyville
Coffeyville, KS-Leave it to the last game of the year to be the wackiest.
Fred Davis ran for a season-high 168 yards, the defense forced three turnovers, and Garden City beat Coffeyville, 26-21 Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Kody Kirk threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncbusters, which finished with a losing record for a second straight season. Jaylan Bean had four catches for 79 yards, and Bryce Butler tallied six tackles, a half a sack, and a quarterback hurry.
Coffeyville, which really fell off the table after landing in the national playoffs in 2022, played three different quarterbacks in this one. Jeff Leiker pulled the plug on starter Enzo Tedesco after he threw two backbreaking picks in the first half. He was replaced by Geremiah Moore, who threw for 68 yards and two scores. Connor Apo also saw time after Moore was knocked out for one play.
Neither team mustered much during an uneventful first quarter. But the Broncbusters got on the board early in the second when Kirk hit Oregon transfer Isaiah Brevard in stride for a 77-yard touchdown to give the visitors a 6-0 advantage.
Garden City had a chance to extend the lead after Keshawn Washington intercepted Tedesco at the Broncbuster 10. But a fumbled snap and a false start penalty derailed the drive, and the Broncbusters were forced to punt.
Coffeyville took full advantage of that missed opportunity on their ensuing drive when Tedesco marched the Red Ravens 62 yards in just four plays polishing it off with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Young that gave Coffeyville a 7-6 lead going into the locker room. They extended it to 14-6 on their first possession of the third quarter when Moore found Baylor Nash for a 14-yard score.
The Broncbusters responded in a big-time way from there.
Kirk connected with Keyon Brown for a 91-yard touchdown the next time Garden City had the ball. Unfortunately, the sophomore was knocked out of the game when Griffin Lampton was called for targeting.
In the fourth quarter, Fred Davis punched it in from four yards out, and third-string quarterback Zo Harper scored from two yards out to give the Broncbusters a 26-14 lead with 5:22 remaining.
Coffeyville managed to get a late touchdown pass from Moore to Brec Long that made it a six-point game. However, Garden City recovered the onside kick and ran out of the clock.
