Mills named the NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week
By Mike Pilosof
Garden City, KS-Dedrick Mills is putting the entire country on notice. And yes, they're listening.
The redshirt sophomore dazzled in his regular-season debut, running wild through the Dodge City defense to the tune of 267 yards and three touchdowns. For those efforts, the Georgia-Tech transfer was named the National Junior College Athletic Association player of the week on Thursday.
"I talked with my brother and my family during the summer," Mills said. "It helped me refocus. I know what I need to do to get out of here."
Mills night was full of superlatives; none more breathtaking than his 50-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that put the game on ice. It was a grim reminder to defensive coordinators around the nation that Mills is coming. And that's a scary proposition.
Between Mills and Charles West, Garden City totaled 490 rushing yards, the second highest, single-game total in program history. They had 316 at half.
"We have two really good running backs," Sims said. "And when we come together as a team, we're pretty good."
Mills averaged 11.1 yards per carry, becoming the first Broncbuster since Gabe Luyanda in 2015 to garner national player of the week honors.
Garden City is back on the road Saturday vs. Ellsworth. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
