Saba named KJCCC player of the week
Garden City, KS-Garden City defensive back Warren Saba was sick of the losing.
"We've been losers for three weeks," he said before the Butler game. "I'm tired of it."
On Saturday, Saba did everything he could to make sure Garden City did not drop their third straight game. In the process, his performance earned him conference player of the week honors.
Saba intercepted two passes, including one in the fourth-quarter that setup Terry Wilson's one-yard touchdown pass that acted as insurance.
"I asked Coach "O" (David Overstreet) what I needed to do because I was getting beat on the post," Saba said. "I took what he told me and applied it to the second half."
Saba's biggest contribution came when Butler had a chance to tie the game following Chris Helbig's touchdown pass to Gerrit Prince. On the two-point conversion, Saba read the slant perfectly, and batted it away from Prince, preserving a two-point lead.
"That play that he (Saba) made on that slant was remarkable," Head Coach Jeff Sims said. "We get all caught up with the interceptions, but that was the play of the game."
Saba tallied five tackles and four pass breakups. His first interception came in the opening quarter when he jumped in front of a pass that was intended for Kendall Stewart. The redshirt freshman caught it, and raced 64 yards to the 1-yard line. On the very next play, Charles West walked into the end zone, starting a stretch of 22 consecutive points where the Broncbusters never looked back.
