Dec. 3 now in the history books for years to come
Garden City, KS-When the final seconds ticked off the clock in the 2016 National Championship game in Yuma, AZ., Garden City Head Football Coach Jeff Sims finally allowed himself to enjoy the moment.
"I hope people understand the amount of hard work and dedication that went into this season," Sims said. "From the players to the all the coaches; we did it."
Peyton Huslig's last-second touchdown pass to Harley Hazlett will now be relived every year. Garden City mayor Chris Law along with city manager Matt Allen, officially declared Dec. 3 as NJCAA Football National Championship Day.
"It's a really cool deal," Sims said.
Dr. Herbert Swender echoed Sims sentiments.
"Hats off to coach Sims and the coaching staff, student services for eligibility and keeping the paperwork, the band, the horse Victory and our young rider, Roxanne Harper, and the cheer and dance team," he said. The athletic leadership of John Green, the fan engagement, and the atmosphere at the college— people always tell me how much the atmosphere and collegiate experience is elevated at Garden City Community College."
The official proclamation is on full display in the Hall of Fame room at the Perryman Athletic Complex.
