Scales resigns as women's basketball coach
Garden City, KS-After three seasons, Garden City women's basketball coach, Antwain Scales announced his resignation on Thursday.
"We are certainly happy for Coach Scales," Director of Athletics, Mike Pilosof said in a statement. "He is getting an opportunity to coach at the Division-I level."
Scales, who was recently named a women's assistant coach on Terry Nooner's staff at Wichita State, went 42-44 during his tenure with the Broncbusters with his best year coming in 2021-22 when Garden City finished 18-12 and 13-11 in conference play.
"We thank Coach Scales for his three years and wish him nothing but the best," Pilosof added.
During his three seasons, Scales' teams excelled off the floor posting a 3.0 or higher-grade point average each semester. In the fall, the team achieved a 3.7 GPA, the second highest amongst all programs at Garden City.
"Coach Scales' teams definitely excelled off the floor," Pilosof said. "There was an expectation with those student-athletes, and the bar was set extremely high."
The former USA Today High School Coach of the Year, who led Wichita South to four straight Class 6A titles, has had a knack for turning programs around. Before coming to Garden City, Scales helped resurrect the Colby women's team, winning 19 games in just his second year at the helm. It was their first winning season in more than a decade.
During his Garden City tenure, Scales constantly helped his players move on to four-year programs including four from the 2021-22 team. In addition, he coached the 2021 and 2022 Jayhawk Conference defensive player of the year in Donetria McGee and Britney Mapang, who went on to sign at Arkansas-Little Rock with former Broncbuster Head Coach, Bobby Brasel.
