Davis's triple double sparks Garden City's blowout win
Garden City, KS-Taya Davis joined elite company on Tuesday night.
The freshman posted a triple double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, Jae'Mya Lyons grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds, and Garden City smoked Kansas Wesleyan, 88-39 at Conestoga Arena.
"We still have to execute on certain things, but overall, we played pretty well," Head Coach, Antwain Scales said. "Taya was great. She got her teammates involved, and she's the catalyst for what we're trying to do."
How good was Davis? Her 11 rebounds were almost as many as the entire starting lineup combined for Kansas Wesleyan (17). She logged 36 minutes, added three steals and had two blocks.
"She had a great game tonight," Scales stated. "She did have some turnovers, but overall, she was really good."
Garden City broke open a 4-4 game with a 10-2 run capped by Davis's smooth there-point play that made it 14-6. Dayshawna Carter followed with back-to-back midrange jumpers before adding a transition layup after Jada Renner coughed up the ball to give the Broncbusters their first double-digit lead of the night. They were up 12 after one and 20 six minutes into the second thanks to Jersey Mayfield's offensive rebound and stick back that made it 38-18.
"Our outside shooting tonight was pretty good," Scales said.
The Broncbuster defense was once again on full display in the second period, limiting Kansas Wesleyan to just four points on 2-of-17 shooting. The visitors were held scoreless the final 7:01 of the half, and Garden City was up, 44-18.
"We just have to keep building off each game," Scales mentioned.
The Broncbusters were never challenged in the second half, pushing their lead to 49 in the final 30 seconds following Destiny Smith's triple from the top of the key, giving Garden City their second straight 3-0 start.
Carter was magnificent again, finishing with 24 points on 11-of-20 shooting in 32 minutes for the Broncbusters. Lyons posted her second double-double with 15 points and a season-high 18 boards, and Mayfield tallied 20 points.
Emily Lozoya paced Kansas Wesleyan with 13 points.
