Bio

Steve McCollom begins his first season as defensive coordinator at Garden City Community College. 

McCollom has four years in the Jayhawk Conference, all at Independence Community College. Over that period, he recruited, developed, coached, and graduated over 80 NCAA college football players. 63 of them being Division One, 19 Power 5, 31 Group of 5, and 13 FCS. At Independence CC, he was the Defensive Coordinator from 2020 - 2022 & the Special Teams Coordinator in 2019. As a Defensive Coordinator in 2021, McCollom's defense was #2 in points against, total yards, fumble recoveries, and #5 in passing/rushing yards in the NJCAA. In 2022 they were #1 in total yards, #2 in pass defense, and #3 in points against the KJCCC. In 2020 (Covid Spring 2021) they were #1 in fumble recoveries, defensive touchdowns, and #2 in sacks in the KJCCC. Independence CC won a share of the KJCCC in 2021 & in 2019 won a KJCCC championship. 

Before coming to the KJCCC, McCollom was at the Division-I level with stops at The University at Buffalo and The University of Toledo. In 2018 he won a MAC East championship at Buffalo. In 2017 he won a MAC Championship at the University of Toledo and the Boca Raton Bowl Game Championship in 2015. As a player, he won 46 games in a row and Back to Back to Back National Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. 

McCollom has worked with/for these Head Coaches throughout his career: Matt Campbell (Iowa State), Jason Candle (Toledo), Lance Leipold (Kansas), Kiyoshi Harris (Garden City CC), Jason Martin (DBs - Western Kentucky), Keith Donerson (Independence CC).

McCollom resides in Garden City with his wife Kristen, and their three children (Case - 15, Charlotte - 6, Jackson - Under 1).
