Lyons goes for 28 in Garden City's win over Bethany
Garden City, KS-Through two games, Jae'Mya Lyons has made presence felt.
The freshman, who went for 21 and 16 vs. Lamar on Thursday, scored 28 points on 13-of-17 shooting, Dayshawna Carter added 13, and Garden City improved to 2-0 with an 80-50 victory over Bethany Sunday afternoon at Conestoga Arena.
"We won, but I am disappointed in our performance today," Head Coach, Antwain Scales said. "We need to see the people who consider themselves veterans to step up. We need to see the effort every single time."
Still, it's hard to be critical in a 30-point blowout. The Broncbusters shot 50 percent from the floor and outscored the Swedes, 52-12 in the paint. They produced 19 assists and out rebounded Bethany, 39-28.
"I still think that we played down to the level of our competition," Scales explained. "We took plays off, and we did a lot of fouling."
Bethany shot eight more free throws (22-of-28) and got 17 points from the bench. But the game was never close.
Garden City never trailed in this one. They were up 19-9 after one and limited the Swedes to 1-of-14 shooting in the second. In fact, Bethany's lone field goal in the period was a Kassi Ballard triple with 58 seconds remaining. On the other end, Lyons scored 17 of her 28 points over the first 20 minutes including a pair of layups over the final 120 seconds of the half. Jersey Mayfield then nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key to end the quarter, giving the Broncbusters a 39-14 halftime advantage.
"We have to get back to the drawing board defensively," Scales implored. "We are a defensive-minded team."
Garden City was never challenged in the second half, opening up a 35-point lead after Maya White Eagle connected on a deep 3-pointer to make it 74-39 with 4:52 remaining.
Lyons added eight rebounds for Garden City, which is now plus-13 on the glass through two games. Taya Davis scored 11 points and dished out a game-high seven assists, and Cayanna Stanley had two steals in 23 minutes off the bench.
Makenzie Noll scored 12 points to pace the Swedes.
