Independence, KS-Cassi Smith had three hits, Meriah Richardson drove in two, and Independence shutout Garden City 7-0 in game two Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Kiana Turner singled off of Kaylee Rogers to put Independence up 1-0.
But the fatal blow came in the third. Rogers surrendered three straight singles, including an RBI base hit to Kiersten Brown, the Pirates scored another run on a passed ball, and Richardson singled home a pair before Devin Hernandez's error at short brought another run around for a 7-0 Independence advantage.
Garden City had a chance to get back in the game in the fourth after loading the bases. But Rogers was thrown out at home plate, and Madison Brasher grounded out to third to end the inning.
Rogers took the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings. Madison Biller pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits.
