Garden City, KS-Miranda Nester collected two hits, Jordan Cordery struck out six, and Seward County held off Garden City 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Tangeman Sports Complex.
Nester got the Saints on the board first in the third with an RBI double off of Ariel Denney. Two batters later, Jaci Oakley ripped a two-run extra base hit, and the Saints had a 3-0 advantage.
Garden City came back in the home half. Madison Brasher reached on an error, and Madison Biller's single moved her to third. Moments later, Brasher scored when Denney bounced into a 6-4-3 double play. An inning later, another Saints' miscue plated Vivian Lopez to slice the Seward County lead to one.
But the Saints created some separation in the top of the fifth. Madeline Owen doubled home a run, and Emily Mojica added an RBI groundout to stretch the lead to three.
Garden City got closer in the bottom half when Gaby Hernandez connected on her first home run of the season: a two-run shot that trimmed the Saints lead to one, 5-4. But the Broncbusters were held without a hit the rest of the way.
Denney took the loss for Garden City, striking out 11 in seven innings. She gave up four earned runs on eight hits.
Nester was 2-for-4, and Oakley drove in two runs for Seward.
