Two qualify for indoor nationals at Corky Classic
Lubbock, TX-The Broncbusters qualified two athletes for indoor nationals at the Corky Classic on Saturday at Texas Tech University.
Women's recap
Diondra Wilborn became the first Broncbuster to punch their ticket to the postseason, clocking a personal-best time of 8.94 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. On Friday, she ran a PR of 26.61 in the 200 meters, finishing 26th.
Meantime, Heidy Aguilar and Serena Degollado made their debuts in the women's weight throw. Aguilar threw a top mark of 12.08 meters, while Degollado landed at 10.94. Both marks were the best the program has seen in more than a decade.
Elsewhere, Cielo Garcia and Andrea Serrano posted times of 3:03.82 and 3:07.10 in their 800-meter debut. Shareen Cheruiyot and Valentine Lagat competed in the 3,000-meter race with Cheruiyot recording a time of 11:51.99. Lagat was not far behind, clocking in at 12:13.71. Finally, Jania Don Juan ran a time of 3:54.27 in her debut in the 1,000-meter run.
Men's recap
Dennis Mutai qualified for indoor nationals in the 3,000-meter run, posting a time of 8:44.46; good for fourth place. He also set a new school record while teammate Kelvin Cheruiyot took 10th with a time of 9:18.14.
Jereun Wagner was the top Broncbuster in the 60-meter dash, finishing 17th with a PR of 7.02. Tahj Ferguson and Fabian Nava also posted personal bests with times of 7.21 and 7.32 respectively.
Shaun Johnson paced Garden City in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Johnson clocked a time of 8.90, finishing 22nd in the event. Jaden Powell was just behind him at 8.95, Deboinare Williams came in at 9.04, and Camero Collins earned a new PR (10.49).
Meantime, the men's 4x400 team (Powell, Wagner, Etienne James, and Angel Ayala) took 15th with a time of 3:29.33.
On Friday, Nava took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.85 meters, the second-best mark of his career. Ferguson was 10th (6.48 meters).
Holcomb-native Isaiah Armstrong was the top finisher in the 600-yard run, taking home 22nd with a time of 1:17.40, which was a new personal best. Powell was right on his heels in 23rd (1:17.94), James was 25th (1:21.19), and Matiyron Easley posted a time of 1:28.4.
Wagner was the squad's top finisher in the 200 meters, sprinting a personal-best of 22.01 seconds, earning him a fifth-place spot. Williams tied his pr with a 23.52, and Johnson posted a new career high 24.23.
In the 1,000-meter run, Angel Ayala had the top Garden City time (2:48.13) with Zaccerie Penka and Matt Veloz both posting sub 3:00 in their debut. Cycle Person also ran a personal best of 3:23.71.
The Broncbusters are back in action on Saturday at the Washburn All-Kansas Invite.
