Comeback falls short for Garden City volleyball
Garden City, KS-Broncbuster volleyball coach Jacquelynne Matula has learned a lot about her team in the first few weeks of the season: No matter what kind of hole that they're in, the fight never dies. Thursday night was a perfect example.
Similar to Wednesday night at Seward County, the Broncbusters dropped the first two sets to Laramie County before winning the third; then narrowly dropping the fourth at the Perryman Athletic Complex.
"We saw a lot of really good things tonight," Matula said. "We've been getting off to slow starts, but I thought we did a lot of things well."
After Laramie won the first two frames 18-25, 15-25, Garden City (2-8, 0-2) responded resoundingly, dismantling the Golden Eagles 25-12.
"That third set was an example of what we can do," Matula added. "We struggled with our passing tonight, but the girls are starting to figure some things out."
In the fourth set, the two teams built two-point leads at one point. Trailing 24-22, the Broncbusters evened the match, but Laramie County scored the final two points, sending Garden City to their fourth straight loss.
"We just have to put everything together," Matula said. "It will come."
Abigail Skeeler paced the Broncbusters with 11 kills and hit .375. Shaney Tiumalu added nine kills, Bailey Martinez had 21 digs and Madison Park recorded 17 assists.
Garden City is back in action on Monday, Sept. 11 at Butler. 6:30 p.m. match time.
