Garden City, KS-Second-year Garden City coach Scott Westbrook felt his women's team would be improved following a rebuilding 2017.
And even in defeat on Tuesday, the Broncbusters showed there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Northeastern jumped out to a 2-0 advantage six minutes into the match; then added a backbreaking goal in the final stages of the first half in a 5-2 victory over Garden City at Broncbuster Stadium.
Jaycie Dillenburg found the back of the net five minutes into the game; then added her second goal 60 seconds later to put the home squad in an early hole. Paolo Guzman though kept Garden City in it, responding with a score of her own off a free kick at the 10-minute mark to slice the deficit in half. But after a strong defensive stretch, Jasmin Ghafoerkhan broke through for Northeastern, drilling one past Broncbuster keeper Kaylee Keller from 10 yards out, giving the Plainsmen a 3-1 edge at half.
Johaly Pontillo made things interesting again when she pulled Garden City to within one, 3-2 five minutes into the final frame. But the Broncbusters could never grab the equalizer, and Dillenburg added her third goal followed by Serenity Sanford's score with five minutes left in the match that put it away.
Garden-City native Goretti Menez had one assist, while Keller recorded five saves.
