Garden City, KS-It took a little longer than expected, but Garden City finally figured things out.
Talia Roberts and Daz'Monique Johnson each scored 14 points, the Broncbusters shot a season-best 50 percent from the field, and Garden City pulled away from Bethel 77-40 Friday night at Conestoga Arena.
In the first 10 minutes, the Broncbusters struggled to create any separation. They trailed early by three before taking their first lead on Johnson's made layup with 3:28 go in the first. But still, nothing was falling, as the home team missed all four of their triples in the first. The game was tied going into the second.
After that, Bethel stood no chance.
Alyssa Boyce, Kelcy McHenry, and Taneigh Boyd all made layups before Talia Roberts drilled a 3, sparking a 17-0 run that put Garden City up 32-15 with 4:48 remaining in the half. Charinee Mitchell's team held the Thrashers scoreless for the first 5:52 of the second, turning a tie game into a 14-point lead at the break.
The Broncbusters put the game away in the third, outscoring Bethel 30-4 while shooting a blistering 58 percent from the field. They led by as many as 40 in the second half.
Roberts dished out a season-high eight assists, while Johnson fell two rebounds shy of a double-double. McHenry scored nine points in 26 minutes, and Sarah Alsabbaheen added six and two assists off the bench.
Ashytn Brown led Bethel with 16 points, and Kadi Relph chipped in 13.
