Garden City rolls; Vargas tosses five-inning no-no
Borger, TX-Yina Ballesta Vargas didn't even break a sweat.
The sophomore hurler tossed a no hitter, Chiara Olison drove in four runs, and Garden City blanked Frank Phillips, 12-0 in five innings Monday afternoon.
Maria Avendano Fori went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI for the Broncbusters, which won their third straight game following an 0-4 start. Daryelin Rivas Chavez collected two hits.
Vargas was in command from the start striking out a pair in the first. Her only blemish came when she hit Savannah Sanchez to lead off the second. But she rebounded quickly, inducing a pop up and a ground out before striking out Mariah De Santiago on a rise ball. The sophomore struck out the side in the third; got Alexis Chapa to chase strike three in the fourth and punched out the final two batters to end the game in the fifth.
Meantime, the offense plated three runs in both the first and second innings before a six-run third put the game away. Kenzie Garza smoked an RBI double, Chavez singled home a run, and Fori knocked in two with a single to left center. Two batters later, Olison hit an RBI single to right, giving Garden City a 12-0 advantage.
Vargas (2-2) struck out nine for the Broncbusters, which improved to 3-4 overall. Her counterpart, Brenda Ramirez, allowed 12 runs on 10 hits and walked six.
