Saints take down Garden City in game two
By Mike Pilosof
Liberal, KS-Madeline Owen homered, Nissy Lechuga drove in three runs, and Seward County completed the two-game sweep with a 9-1 win over Garden City Saturday afternoon at French Family Field.
The Saints got to Broncbuster starter Brittany Dowell early. In the first, Seward scored two runs off of Ariel Denney's error in center. That was followed by Emily Mojica's RBI groundout that made it 3-0. In the second, Lechuga added an RBI double to stretch it to 5-0.
Garden City's lone offensive highlight came in the top of the third. With two outs, Madison Brasher scored on a wild pitch, slicing the Saints lead to 5-1. But Seward answered resoundingly to begin the home half when Owen cranked a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield fence to make it 6-1. A few batters later, Jordan Cordery roped an RBI single to push the lead to six, and in the fifth, Seward finished off the run rule in the fifth with a pair of RBI singles by Alyssah Pantoja and Lechuga.
Pantoja picked up the win in the circle, holding Garden City to just one run on four hits in five innings. Miranda Nester, Lechuga, and Owen all collected two hits.
Dowell took the loss for Garden City, surrendering seven runs (just two earned) over two innings.
